You’re probably familiar with the Serenity Prayer, popularized by churches, Alcoholics Anonymous and other affiliated twelve-step programs: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
We love the beauty of this simple prayer, and it’s been popping into mind a lot lately…like every time we see a call for people to stay calm (and to stop hoarding toilet paper!)…or when we got word that schools were cancelled…that our biggest show of the year was cancelled the day before setup…and especially when we think about the impact that COVID-19 is going to have on all of us.
No matter what your beliefs are, the popular prayer is a great reminder that we don’t have ultimate control over our circumstances, but there are things we can do. And we can leave the rest. So, what if we decide to radically accept the “new normal”? To take the steps we can to protect the health of ourselves and our community, and then focus on making the most of it? To thrive in it?
Here are some of the ways we’re going to make the most of social distancing in our homes:
- Meditation — Headspace is a great tool for guided meditation, and there are a number of COVID-19 related meditations popping up Instagram and YouTube, too

- Routine and Structure — here’s a handy COVID-19 daily schedule for families with kids
- Music — we plan to ditch the TV more in favor of listening to lots of music and working on little projects around the house or reading
- Cooking Healthy Meals — there’s no better time than now to pay more attention to what we’re eating and get in the groove of plant-based eating…what new recipes have you been wanting to try?
- Good Sleep Habits — In 2016, the CDC concluded that more than one-third of Americans weren’t getting enough sleep. We’ll be taking shameless naps when possible, and working on waking up earlier for more solo time in the morning.
